Father Abel and an uncle were jockeys in Venezuela. Brother Abel Jr., rides in Maryland and Delaware. Notes: Javier Castellano started his career in 1996. After his initial success in Venezuela, he moved to the United States in June 1997 in search of victory on the South Florida Circuit. He registered his first win in the United States riding Phone Man on July 31, 1997 at the historic Calder Race Course. He came to New York in 2001 and got immediate success by finishing sixth in the New York jockey standings. In the next year he improved his position to second spot at the same venue. Castellano won riding titles at Aqueduct, Tropical-at-Calder and Hialeah. He performed brilliantly at Saratoga by winning five races on one card and clinched victory at Saratoga for two consecutive terms in 2004 and 2005 including an upset on Mass Media in the Forego Stakes. Castellano posted his 2000th win on April 26, 2007 at Calder. In 2004, Javier was the rider for Frank Stronach�s colt Ghostzapper; he has won many races with him including the 2004 Breeders� Cup Classic. Two years after, he raced with Bernardini for Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum�s Darley Dancing. With Bernandini, he clinched victories in the Preakness Stakes and in the Jockey Cup Gold Cup. |
