Garrett K. Gomez began career in September 1988 at Santa Fe Downs. He won his first riding title at the Hollywood autumn meet in 1998. He became second-leading apprentice of 1989 with 182 winners. Gomez rode against his father, Louie, at least four times. He captured back-to-back runnings of the Arkansas Derby in 1994 with Concern and in 1995 aboard Dazzling Falls. Victories at Arlington Park include the 1997 Mid-America Triple with Honor Glide, comprising the American Derby, the Arlington Classic, and the Secretariat Stakes. Garrett Gomez won his 2,000th race at Del Mar in August 2002. Gomez missed 21 months for personal reasons including substance abuse problems. He entered rehab on October 29, 2003, a date that coincided with his two Breeders Cup victories two years later. He ended 2005 ranked fifth nationally in purse earnings with 13,889,511 while winning 239 races in 1,268 mounts. He galloped Rags to Riches to victory in the 2007 Kentucky Oaks (G1). His best Kentucky Derby finish (G1) came in 1994 when Southern Rhythm managed to finish seventh. In 2008 Kentucky Derby (G1) he bagged the 13th spot riding Court Vision. He finished fourth aboard Hard Spun in the 2007 Belmont Stakes (G1). He was awarded the Bill Shoemaker Award in 2005, 2007 and 2008.He received Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey both in the years 2007 and 2008.
