Victor's Cry wins Shoemaker Mile at Hollywood Park
June 1, 2010INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) -Victor's Cry defeated Karelian by a head to win Monday's $250,000 Shoemaker Mile at Hollywood Park in his first Grade 1 stakes race.
Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Victor's Cry covered the distance on the turf in 1:32.88 and paid $44.40, $12.60 and $7.20 at 21-1 odds.
Karelian returned $3.60 and $2.80 as the 9-5 favorite, while Mr Gruff was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $4 to show after setting the early pace.
The victory was Nakatani's fifth in the Shoemaker, one behind the late Hall of Fame jockey for whom the race is named.
``Turning for home I felt all I needed was a spot to run,'' said Nakatani, who now rides regularly in Kentucky. ``He made a strong move from the three-eighths pole to get position and to be able to win the race I had to try to time it as best as I could.''
The victory was the fifth in 17 career starts for Victor's Cry, who has earnings of $350,633.
Evening Jewel won the $150,000 Honeymoon Handicap in a photo finish, beating Cozi Rosie by a head.
Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Evening Jewel covered 1 1-8 miles on the turf in 1:48.87 and paid $3.80, $2.80 and $2.40. Cozi Rosie returned $3.60 and $2.80, while City To City was another length back in third and paid $3.40 to show.
Evening Jewel was coming off a nose loss to Blind Luck in the Kentucky Oaks on April 30 at Churchill Downs. Monday's victory was the third in 10 starts for the California-bred who carried high weight of 122 pounds. She has career earnings of $606,943.
J P's Gusto won the $66,000 Willard L. Proctor Memorial by 4 1/2 lengths in the first 2-year-old stakes race of the year in Southern California.
Ridden by Joe Talamo, J P's Gusto ran 5 1/2 furlongs in a stakes record time of 1:02.97 and paid $10.80, $3 and $2.40. Belleofthebridle, the only filly in the field, returned $2.10 and $2.10, while Edgewick Road paid $2.40 to show.
The old stakes record was 1:03.04 by Backbackbackgone in 2008.
