Mambo Meister wins Memorial Day Handicap
June 1, 2010MIAMI (AP) -Mambo Meister ran away from the field to win the $100,000 Memorial Day Handicap by 7 3/4 lengths at Calder on Monday.
The 5-year old gelding had also won the $100,000 Miami Mile Handicap by a head on the opening day at Calder in April.
Ridden by Manoel Cruz, Mambo Meister easily beat Causeway's Kin, who edged Cinnamon Road for second by a neck. Too Many Toyz was fourth in a field of six older horses going 1 1/16th miles. Mambo Meister was the odds-on favorite; Causeway's Kin was 7-5.
The winner was timed in 1:45 3/5 and paid 3.60, 2.20 and 2.10. Causeway's Kin paid 2.40 and 2.40. Cinnamon Road paid 3.20 to show.
Mambo Meister is a son of King Cugat owned by Quantum Racing Team 1, LLC. He has earned $483,025 with nine victories in 28 starts, six on dirt and three on grass. All his dirt victories have been at Calder.
Cinnamon Road took the lead soon after the start with Mambo Meister second.
Causeway's Kin was third on the inside. Cinnamon Road led by 1 1/2 lengths turning down the backstretch but Mambo Meister eased to the front leaving the far turn and ran away from the field at the top of the stretch.
