Borel on Ailalea wins $110,200 Dogwood
May 29, 2010LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -Ailalea assumed command at the head of the stretch and then held off a late bid from Tap Tap Tapping by a length to win the 36th running of the Dogwood for 3-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs.
Riley Tucker captured the 22nd running of the $107,900 Aristides by two lengths over Atta Boy Roy in the first of Saturday's two features.
Ailalea, under Calvin Borel, was content to track in third in the $110,200 race as Helen Belen and Visavis dueled for the lead. Visavis briefly stuck her head in front leaving the far turn only to be quickly overtaken by Ailalea.
Ailalea opened a daylight advantage in the stretch and had more than enough left to hold off Tap Tap Tapping and complete the mile on a fast main track in 1:35.89.
In the Aristides, jockey Shaun Bridgmohan steered Riley Tucker to the rail on the run down the backstretch. Turning for home, Riley Tucker slipped to the inside of Chief of Affairs and surged past Atta Boy Roy to draw away to his fifth victory in 24 starts.
Riley Tucker ran the six furlongs over a fast track in 1:08.34.
The victory was worth $66,229 and increased Riley Tucker's earnings to $440,805.
Riley Tucker returned $11.80, $4.20 and $2.60. Second choice Atta Boy Roy, ridden by Borel, returned $3.40 and $2.20.
Ailalea improved her record to 8-3-0-1 and increased her earnings to $186,525 with Saturday's $66,274 winner's check.
Ailalea returned $4, $3 and $2.40. Tap Tap Tapping, the longest price in the field of eight at 31-1, returned $18.20 and $8 under Freddie Lenclud.
