US-based trotter Lucky Jim tops field for Elitlopp
May 29, 2010STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -American trotter Lucky Jim is the 3-1 favorite for Sunday's $500,000 Elitlopp invitational harness race at Solvalla Raceway.
Lucky Jim has won 21 of his last 24 starts, and was a finalist for 2009 Harness Horse of the Year won by Muscle Hill.
The last U.S-owned horse to win the prestigious race was Moni Maker in 1998.
Lucky Jim will leave from the No. 7 post in the first elimination heat, with defending Elitlopp winner Torvald Palema starting from the No. 1 post in the second heat. The top four finishers from each eight-horse heat will meet in the same-day final.
Lucky Jim, a 5-year-old gelding, cruised a mile around the five-eighths of a mile track earlier this week. Driver Andy Miller said he was surprised to see how the curves around the track were built up, but Lucky Jim ``handled the curves as well as the track nicely.''
Lucky Jim is trained by Miller's wife, Julie, and owned by David Prushnok, John Prushok and Bill Gregg, all from Punxsutawney, Pa.
Enough Talk, another U.S. entry, will be making his third appearance in the Elitlopp. He was third in 2008 and did not reach the final last year.
