Rachel Alexandra eyeing return at Churchill Downs
April 25, 2010LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra could be heading back to work.
Owner Jess Jackson is considering running the 4-year-old filly in the $400,000 La Troienne Stakes next Friday at Churchill Downs.
Rachel Alexandra hasn't run since finishing second to Zardana in the New Orleans Ladies on March 13, a performance that ended plans for her to meet unbeaten mare Zenyatta at the Apple Blossom.
The La Troienne is a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up. The race is the day before the Kentucky Derby, and on the undercard of the Kentucky Oaks, which Rachel Alexandra won by a record 20 1/4-lengths last year.
``Right now we're pointing there,'' Jackson said in a release. ``We'd like it to be.''
Jackson says he'll wait to see how Rachel Alexandra recovers from a light workout Monday before making a decision. She posted a blistering six-furlong workout last Monday, covering the distance in 1:11.40 seconds.
``Churchill is her favorite track and she's surely giving us every sign of being ready to run,'' Jackson said. ``She's going to need another race before she really defines herself the way she did early last year but I think she's 85 percent to 90, maybe 95, right now.''
Entries for the La Troienne are due on Tuesday.
Jackson purchased Rachel Alexandra last spring following her win in the Oaks, and she became the first filly in 85 years to win the Preakness. Victories in the Mother Goose, Haskell and Woodward followed.
It was good enough to edge Zenyatta for Horse of the Year, and the two stars appeared poised to finally meet on the track in the Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park.
Jackson changed his mind following her upset loss to Zardana - a stablemate of Zenyatta - in New Orleans.
