Delaware Park bans Vazquez

Embattled trainer Juan Vazquez has been indefinitely barred from the grounds of Delaware Park. “Juan Vazquez has been barred from Delaware Park but I have no comment on the reason why,” he said.

Vazquez’s attorney, Alan Pincus, said that he was informed that Vazquez had been banned but was also not given a reason why. “Delaware has common-law rights, and a racetrack can bar anyone they choose without a hearing or giving a reason why,” Pincus said. “It’s incredibly unfair. Juan told me that he does not know why he has been banned.” Fasy said that Delaware Park follows the “same procedure” for anyone who is barred. “The person can appeal, after waiting a reasonable period of time, at least a year, and we have a committee that reviews the appeal,” he said.

John Wayne, executive director of the Delaware Racing Commission, said there are no pending complaints with the commission regarding Vazquez. Vazquez is also barred from the Maryland Jockey Club tracks of Laurel Park and Pimlico. He has been banned twice from Penn National Race Course in Pennsylvania, once in March and once in April. The first ban was overturned by the Pennsylvania Racing Commission and the second was upheld and is now under appeal. Vazquez has also been barred from racing at Charles Town in West Virginia. He is awaiting a hearing on that matter, according to Pincus.

Penn National and Charles Town are both owned by Penn National Gaming. Vazquez’s trouble began in June 2014 when he was involved in a winner’s circle altercation at Delaware Park with jockey Trevor McCarthy. Vazquez was ruled the aggressor in the fight and was suspended 90 days, which he served last fall and winter. While he was serving his suspension, Hector Garcia, who was overseeing Vazquez’s Pimlico stable, had four medication positives, three for the anabolic steroid stanozolol and one for the tranquilizer xylazine. Vazquez’s wife, Kaelynn Moury, was the attending veterinarian. Garcia was suspended 13 months and the Maryland Jockey Club revoked Vazquez’s stalls and ruled him off. Vazquez is currently training at the Middletown Training Center in Delaware.
