Kentucky Derby 2015 post position draw: Time and TV schedule
April 29, 2015The post position draw for the 141st Kentucky Derby will be held Wednesday, an event that commands a fair amount of drama and stands to impact Saturday's Run for the Roses in a significant way.
This year's field is deep, and the 2015 Kentucky Derby is significant because of the size of the field: 20 horses. With 20 horses and 20 starting gates, being sequestered on the far inside or outside could be too much of a handicap to overcome with so many strong horses scattered across the dirt.
For instance, only one horse has won the Kentucky Derby from the No. 20 gate since 1930 (when Churchill Downs began using starting gates): 2008 champion Big Brown. That horse was dominant, winning by 4 3/4 lengths. Since 1930, only three horses total have won the Derby starting outside the No. 16 post.
The odds are always high to pick one horse over the field, especially in a race crammed with 19 other horses. With all the buzz around likely morning line favorites for Kentucky Derby Odds American Pharoah, Carpe Diem, Dortmund and Upstart -- among others -- Wednesday's draw could make the odds even longer for an unlucky handful of horses.
