Belmont Stakes workouts: Giant Finish , Vyjack have works postponed by rain
June 4, 2013BELMONT PARK, N.Y. – Rain, at times extremely heavy, turned what was already expected to be a quiet morning into an even quieter one at Belmont Park for the 11 prospective Belmont Stakes starters on the grounds here Monday.
Monday at Belmont Park
67 degrees, raining, sloppy
Giant Finish, who arrived from the Fair Hill training center Sunday, and Vyjack were scheduled to work after the break Monday. But overnight rains had all but canceled those plans even before downpours soaked the main track just as it re-opened following the renovation break at 8:45 a.m.
Vyjack did finally make it out to train about a half-hour later, once the heaviest of the rain had subsided. With the track a mess by that time, trainer Rudy Rodriguez, who also gallops Vyjack, opted to keep his horse on the outside fence on what appeared to be the better footing.
Vyjack galloped a very easy 1 1/4 miles going clockwise, or the wrong way, from the finish line around to the clubhouse turn.
Vyjack and Giant Finish were scheduled to try to get their final Belmont works in Tuesday.
