Kentucky Derby: Trinniberg looks fine in first breeze since Dubai flop

MIAMI – Sprint champion Trinniberg got back to work here at Calder on Wednesday, breezing for the first time since his 11th-place finish in the Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan on March 30.

With jockey Jose Alvarez aboard, Trinniberg went an easy half-mile in 50.22 seconds before galloping out five-eighths in 1:02.40 shortly after the renovation break.

“It was a nice easy work, but he finished good and galloped out well,” trainer Shivananda Parbhoo said. “I told Alvarez to start off nice and easy but to jump on him a little and let him pick it up the final quarter-mile. Coming down the lane, he changed leads correctly and galloped out strong, and that was what I was looking to see.”

Parbhoo said he went over Trinniberg with a fine-tooth comb, taking a number of tests and X-rays, to make sure all was well with the reigning Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner following his poor effort in Dubai.

“I don’t know what happened over there. I guess he just didn’t handle the synthetic track,” Parbhoo said. “The track was only one inch deep when he trained in the morning, but it was six or seven inches deep on the day of the race. I also wanted to run him in toe grabs, but they would not let me, so I had to put Queens Plates on him, and he just wasn’t getting a grip of the track at all. He’s the type of horse who likes a little bend on his foot. We run him in quarter-inch bends in all his races here.”

Parbhoo said Trinniberg has been nominated to the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Sprint to be run on the Kentucky Derby undercard May 4.

“We’ll work him here one more time next week and if all goes well, I might send him to Churchill for the race,” Parbhoo said. “My next two choices after that would be the True North at Belmont and the Smile Sprint here in July, although I don’t think I’ll take him to New York. Not after what happened to Ryan in that race last year.”

Parbhoo was referring to Giant Ryan, a Grade 1 winner who had to be euthanized several days after breaking down during the running of the 2012 True North.

Parbhoo also worked his up-and-coming 3-year-old prospect Trinni Heart a half-mile in 47.60 seconds here Wednesday. Trinni Heart, a four-length maiden winner on closing day at Gulfstream Park, galloped out five-eighths in a sharp 1:00.85.

“He switched leads about five strides before the wire this morning, “ Parbhoo said. “That’s something we’ve been trying to work on with him. But he looked super, and I think I might run him in the Big Drama Stakes going six furlongs here next week.”

Wolfson has Musical Romance trio

A field of nine older fillies and mares has been entered for Saturday’s $55,000 Musical Romance, a 6 1/2-furlong overnight stakes for fillies and mares that is part of a 12-race card topped by the Grade 3 Miami Mile Handicap.

Trainer Marty Wolfson has nominated three members of his potent stable to the Musical Romance, led by Centrique, who is coming off a fourth-place finish in the Grade 2 Ruffian Handicap at Aqueduct. Wolfson also has the stakes-placed Bahia Beach and speedy Starship Truffles in the lineup.

Who Is Camille, Latin Rocks, Isabelle’s Thunder, Redbud Road, Prize Informant, and Frolic’s Revenge also entered.
