Mike Smith has picked up the mount on Palace Malice in the Kentucky Derby on May 4, trainer Todd Pletcher said Monday morning.

Palace Malice finished second Saturday in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. He was ridden that day by Garrett Gomez, who is committed to ride Vyjack in the Derby.

Smith, who won the Derby in 2005 with Giacomo, was in need of a mount after War Academy, favored in the Arkansas Derby on Saturday, was eased.
