Hollywood Park: Weewinnin pays $122 for stunning win in King Glorious

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Horse owner Jeremy Peskoff was on the phone to his mother a few minutes after Weewinnin pulled a shocking upset in Sunday’s $200,000 King Glorious Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park.

“We won a $200,000 race,” Peskoff said. “And he paid $122.”

There was no reason to wait to share the news.

Making his first start since August, Weewinnin took the lead in early stretch and beat 11-1 Fighting Hussar by a half-length in the seven-furlong race for 2-year-old California-breds. Monument, the 2-1 favorite and the winner of the California Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita in October, finished third the field of 11.

Ridden by Jose Valdivia Jr., Weewinnin was fourth for the first-quarter-mile, stalking a pace of 22.94 seconds set by the filly Awesome Annie through an opening quarter-mile. Weewinnin was third after a half-mile in 45.92 and rallied to take the lead in early stretch, holding a one-length advantage at the eighth pole.

Weewinnin paid $122, $54.20, and $20.40, and was timed in 1:23.54. The King Glorious Stakes was his first start since a fourth in the Graduation Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 1.

“He had shins out of that race and has come back and trained very good,” trainer Brian Koriner said.

Peskoff is a member of a partnership that includes E-Racing.com, Bill Gray, and Janet Lyons who bought Weewinnin after the colt won a $32,000 claimer for maidens at Golden Gate Fields in June.

Sunday’s win was worth $110,000. Weewinnin, by Comic Strip, has won 2 of 3 starts and $125,900.

Koriner said that Weewinnin will be pointed for the $300,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes for California-bred males over a mile at Santa Anita on Jan. 26.
