Zimmer wins in 15-1 upset at Del Mar
August 23, 2012DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) - Zimmer defeated Leaving New York by a head to win the $73,000 Del Mar Rotary Purse on Thursday at 15-1 odds.
Ridden by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, Zimmer ran a mile on the turf in 1:33.39 and paid $31.80, $12.80 and $5.80. The 6-year-old horse is named for Don Zimmer, a former player, manager and coach in Major League Baseball.
Leaving New York returned $6.40 and $4, while Causeithertz was another three-quarters of a length back in third and paid $2.60 to show as the 9-5 favorite.
Trained by Patrick Byrne, Zimmer earned $55,750 for his fifth win in 19 career starts. The horse shipped in from Kentucky.
