Jockey hurt when mount breaks leg at Saratoga
August 20, 2012SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - Jockey Junior Alvarado was treated at a hospital for abdominal pain after being thrown when his mount, Pete's Parley, fractured his left foreleg and stumbled Monday near the eighth pole in the second race at Saratoga Race Course.
The 26-year-old native of Venezuela began the day as the fifth-leading rider at the meeting.
Pete's Parley was making his 20th career start. He was owned by Matties Racing LLC and trained by Greg Matties, who acquired the 5-year-old for $15,000 in a claiming race at Belmont Park in July. The horse was removed from the racetrack in an ambulance van.
Alvarado was later released from the hospital.
