LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Benburb, the 1992 Prince of Wales Stakes winner in one of the biggest upsets in Canadian horse racing history, has died. He was 23.

The Lexington Herald-Leader (http://bit.ly/OFkUAw ) reports the gray gelding was euthanized Wednesday due to complications from melanomas at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington.

Benburb, Canada's Horse of the Year in 1992 and a 24-1 shot in the Prince of Wales, pulled away from Alydeed in the last strides at Fort Erie Race Track in Ontario. He also beat Belmont Stakes winner A.P. Indy in the Molson Export Million at Toronto the same year.

Benburb earned $1.15 million on seven wins in 22 starts. He had been at Old Friends Thoroughbred retirement center in Scott County since 2008, donated by Catherine Perkins, farm manager of Perkins-Mackey Stables in Bourbon County.
