I'll Have Another headed to stud duty in Japan
June 22, 2012Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I'll Have Another is headed to stud duty in Japan.
A representative of Paul Reddam said Friday that the owner has reached an agreement to sell the colt to Shigeyuki Okada of Big Red Farm on the island of Hokkaido. Financial terms were not disclosed. I'll Have Another will stand at stud starting with the 2013 breeding season alongside two-time Breeders' Cup Turf winner Conduit.
David Leach, who works for Reddam's CashCall Inc. in Anaheim, Calif., says the deal is contingent upon I'll Have Another meeting Japanese export requirements. The colt is tentatively set to leave for Japan in August.
Besides Conduit, Big Red Farm is home to Roses in May, a multiple stakes winner in the United States. I'll Have Another would follow 1989 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Sunday Silence and 2006 Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker in standing at stud in Japan.
He was attempting to become horse racing's 12th Triple Crown winner when a tendon injury led to his sudden retirement a day before the June 9 Belmont Stakes. I'll Have Another finished his career with five wins in seven starts and earnings of $2,693,600, with four of those wins coming this year.
I'll Have Another is based at trainer Doug O'Neill's stable at Betfair Hollywood Park.
