NY attorney general sues retired racehorse charity
May 3, 2012ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has sued a charity that takes care of 1,100 retired racehorses, claiming it's been driven into insolvency and some animals have been neglected, suffering and underfed.
The suit filed Thursday in Manhattan says the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation has taken in far more thoroughbreds than it can afford, with directors ignoring repeated warnings and making ``financially irresponsible'' transactions.
The suit seeks to replace its directors and undertake a thorough inspection of its horses.
Schneiderman says an investigation showed that for years the foundation paid boarding farms no more than $3 a day per horse, far less than other rescue groups. That left some horses getting insufficient feed and little or no veterinary care.
Foundation Chairman John Moore says the neglect allegations are false.
