Marilyn's Guy wins Big A's Excelsior Stakes
March 17, 2012NEW YORK (AP) - Marilyn's Guy held off San Pablo by a neck Saturday in the $150,000 Excelsior Stakes at Aqueduct.
It was strictly a two-horse race. The first two finishers hooked up early, with Marilyn's Guy, a 6-year-old gelding, running alongside the pacesetting San Pablo.
Marilyn's Guy pulled clear on the final turn, opening up a four-length lead at the top of stretch. San Pablo wasn't done, leading the charge through the lane and steadily eating into the leader's margin to force a photo finish.
Trained by Tony Dutrow and ridden by Chuckie Lopez, Marilyn's Guy got his ninth win in 25 starts. He paid $11.40, $5.70 and $3.30. San Pablo returned $5.50 and $3.90, while Norman Asbjornson paid $4.50 to show.
The time was 1:52.54 for 1 1/8 miles.
