Jockey Gomez sidelined by broken left heel
January 12, 2012ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Jockey Garrett Gomez had surgery Thursday for a broken left heel that will keep him out of the saddle for four to six weeks.
Gomez's agent, Tony Matos, says the surgery was done at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles.
Gomez was injured Sunday before the Daytona Stakes at Santa Anita when his mount Silver Summation unseated the 40-year-old rider before flipping over backward leaving the paddock.
Gomez had been off to a good start at the track's winter meeting with six stakes victories through the first 10 days, including the Sham Stakes with Out of Bounds last weekend.
