Trainer McLaughlin takes both Big A stakes
January 7, 2012NEW YORK (AP) - Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin swept both 3-year-old stakes at Aqueduct on Saturday, with Alpha winning the $150,000 Count Fleet and Captivating Lass taking the $100,000 Busanda.
Alpha, the 4-5 favorite, was the more decisive winner, beating Stephanoatsee by 2 1/2 lengths for his second victory in four starts. Ridden by Ramon Dominguez, the colt ran a mile and 70 yards in 1:42.83 and paid $3.60 to win.
Mike Luzzi guided Captivating Lass to a neck victory over Sweet Seventeen in the Busanda for fillies. She improved to 2 for 3, paying $5.80 to win. The time was 1:43.74.
