Veitch's dismissal as Ky. steward leaves questions
December 6, 2011LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - The abrupt firing of former Kentucky Horse Racing Commission chief steward John Veitch's has divided the state's thoroughbred community.
The 66-year-old Veitch was fired without cause last Monday when the Hall of Fame trainer received a letter notifying him of his dismissal from the Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet, which oversees the racing commission. Veitch appealed the decision two days later. He says the state violated his rights by failing to give a reason for his dismissal and that he's been discriminated against because of his age.
Tom Miller, Veitch's lawyer, says his client will have at least a 20-day notice before a hearing takes place.
Veitch has been the chief state steward since 2005. He is seeking that he be reinstated and awarded damages.
