Classic champion Drosselmeyer retired
November 18, 2011VERSAILLES, Ky. (AP) - Drosselmeyer, winner of the Grade I Breeders' Cup Classic and Belmont Stakes, has been retired to stand at stud in Kentucky.
The 4-year-old son of Distorted Humor out of Golden Ballet will stand at WinStar Farm in Versailles for a $17,500 fee.
Drosselmeyer won $3.7 million in his career, making him Distorted Humor's top earner. WinStar purchased him as a yearling for $600,000.
WinStar President and CEO Elliott Walden says Drosselmeyer came out of the Nov. 5 Classic in such good shape that it was hard to decide whether to retire him. He says it was ultimately determined to let the horse go out as a Classic champion.
