41-1 shot Afleet Again wins BC Marathon
November 5, 2011LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Afleet Again kicked off the second day of the Breeders' Cup by coming from well off the pace to score a 21/4-length victory in the $500,000 Marathon at 41-1 odds.
Ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, Afleet Again ran 13/4 miles in 3:00.39 on Saturday and paid $85.20 to win for the first time in nine starts this year.
Birdrun was second and Giant Oak was another head back in third.
It was the first Breeders' Cup win for trainer Butch Reid and the fifth for Velasquez.
A.U. Miner was pulled up by jockey Calvin Borel and didn't finish the race at Churchill Downs. The on-call veterinarian says the horse fractured the sesimoid bone in his left front leg. Meeznah also didn't finish the race, apparently because of fatigue.
