Winter Memories wins Belmont's Garden City Stakes
September 17, 2011NEW YORK (AP) - Winter Memories rallied relentlessly to beat Theyskens' Theory by a neck in the $250,000 Garden City Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on the turf at Belmont Park on Saturday.
Trapped behind a wall of horses in the stretch, Winter Memories and jockey Javier Castellano angled to the far outside and took off. She earned her sixth win in eight starts for trainer Jimmy Toner.
The time was 1:51.06 for the 1 1-8 miles on the firm course.
It was a solid bid by Theyskens' Theory, who won a minor stakes in England in her previous start.
Winter Memories, the even-money favorite, paid $4.20, $2.60 and $2.20. Theyskens' Theory returned $4.80 and $3.50. More Than Real, last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner, paid $3.60 to show.
