Prestigious Keeneland sale begins
September 11, 2011LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - The world's largest thoroughbred auction has begun at Keeneland in Lexington.
The September Yearling Sale began Sunday evening with more than 4,300 yearlings catalogued for the 68th annual event.
The two-evening select portion of the 13-day sale concludes Monday night.
The winners of each of this year's Triple Crown races, including Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, were sold as yearlings at the 2009 September sale. Seventeen Kentucky Derby winners and eight recipients of the Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year have been consigned at the sale.
The record Keeneland September sale came in 2006 at $11.7 million, marking the second-highest yearling price ever paid at a public auction.
