Weemissfrankie wins Del Mar Debutante
September 3, 2011DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) - Weemissfrankie rallied to win the $250,000 Del Mar Debutante by 11/4 lengths Saturday.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Weemissfrankie ran seven furlongs on the synthetic Polytrack surface in 1:23.20 and paid $6.80, $4.40 and $3 as the 2-1 favorite.
Self Preservation, who was supplemented to the race for $10,000, returned $18.20 and $10.20 at 24-1 odds in her American debut after two starts in Ireland.
Emerald Gold was another three-quarters of a length back in third and paid $4 to show.
Weemissfrankie earned $150,000 for her second win in two starts.
In the $91,040 Windy Sands Handicap for older horses, Shediak rallied along the rail in the stretch to win by 13/4 lengths.
Ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, Shediak ran a mile in 1:35.64 and paid $49.80, $18.40 and $9.40 as the longest shot in the field at 23-1.
El Gato Malo paid $13 and $7.60, while Achak was another 11/4 lengths back in third and paid $9.60 to show.
The victory, worth $54,624, increased Shediak's career earnings to $244,261, with three wins in 24 starts.
