Unzip Me wins Daisycutter Handicap
August 12, 2011DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) - Unzip Me overhauled Separate Forest in the stretch to win the $105,685 Daisycutter Handicap by a half-length Friday at Del Mar.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Unzip Me ran five furlongs on the turf in 55.60 seconds and paid $4.40, $2.80 and $2.40 as the 6-5 favorite.
Separate Forest returned $5.40 and $3.80, while Givine was another half-length back in third and paid $3 to show.
The victory, worth $69,225, increased Unzip Me's career earnings to $812,228, with 12 wins in 21 starts.
Mike Mitchell became Del Mar's winningest trainer when Backwoods Belle won the fifth race for his 437th victory at the seaside track. He surpassed Hall of Famer Ron McAnally, still active with 436 victories.
``I'm glad to have it over with and I'm glad that my wife and family are here with me,'' Mitchell said. ``There's no doubt this is special. To go past Ronnie is something.''
