Bourban Bay wins stakes at Del Mar
July 29, 2011DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) - Bourbon Bay pulled away in the stretch to win Friday's $125,000 Cougar II Handicap by 23/4 lengths and set a track record at Del Mar.
Ridden by Joe Talamo, Bourbon Bay ran 11/2 miles on the synthetic Polytrack surface in 2:29.39, bettering the old mark of 2:30.46 set by Temple City in last year's race.
It was Bourbon Bay's second time competing on synthetic, after making 18 of his 20 career starts on the turf. The 5-year-old, trained by Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale, earned $75,000.
Bourbon Bay paid $6.60, $4 and $2.80. Dahoud returned $4.60 and $3.20, while Setsuko was another 11/2 lengths back in third and paid $2.40 to show as the 3-2 favorite.
