Icabad Crane captures Shipman Stakes at Saratoga
July 25, 2011SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - Icabad Crane rallied in the stretch to reel in front-running Stormy's Majesty and win the $75,000 Evan Shipman Stakes for New York-breds by a nose Monday at Saratoga Race Course.
Rajiv Maragh rode the 6-year-old gelding, who ran 1 1/8 miles over a sloppy track in 1:51.42. Mine Over Matter was third of five, the original field diminished by three scratches that followed a heavy rain storm. Friend Or Foe, who would have been heavily favored, was among those withdrawn.
The H. Graham Motion-trained Icabad Crane paid $6.30, $3 and $2.30. Stormy's Majesty paid $2.90 and $2.30. Mine Over Matter paid $2.50 to show. The winner earned $45,000 for owner Earle I. Mack.
