Air Support rallies to win 14th Virginia Derby
July 16, 2011PROVIDENCE FORGE, Va. (AP) - Air Support took the lead from Street Game at the sixteenth pole and won the 14th running of the $600,000 Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs on Saturday night, holding off Banned by a neck.
Alex Solis guided Air Support over the mile and a quarter in 2:00.80 on Colonial Downs' Secretariat Turf Course to earn $15.60, $6.80 and $4.80. Banned returned $4.80 and $3.80, and Casino Host paid $11.20.
The victory avenged losses to Street Game in June's Hill Prince at Belmont Park and to Banned in May's American Turf at Churchill Downs. It was the fourth win in nine starts for the Kentucky-bred colt owned by Stuart Janney III and trained by Claude McGaughey.
