June 14, 2011ASCOT, England (AP) - Unbeaten colt Frankel followed up his 2,000 Guineas success by winning the St. James's Palace Stakes on the opening day of the Royal Ascot meeting.
The three-quarters of a length victory over Zoffany on Tuesday came three days after trainer Henry Cecil was awarded a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II. Excelebration was third.
With Tom Queally on board, Frankel's performance was less emphatic than his dominant victory in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket in April.
In the opening race on Tuesday, Canford Cliffs won the Queen Anne Stakes by a length ahead of 5-4 favorite Goldikova. The 11-8 shot is trained by Richard Hannon and ridden by Richard Hughes.
