Pomeroys Pistol wins Monmouth feature
June 11, 2011OCENAPORT, N.J. (AP) - Pomeroys Pistol drew off in the stretch to win the $75,000 Just Smashing Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday, beating Maple Forest by 41/2 lengths.
Ridden by Chris DeCarlo and trained by Amy Tarrant, the 3-year-old filly ran the six furlongs on a fast track in 1:09 and paid $5.80, $3.20 and $2.20. It was the third win in eight career starts for Pomeroys Pistol, who has now earned $260,178.
Maple Forest returned $3.20 and $2.20, while Honey Chile was another 41/2 lengths back in third and paid $2.10.
In the co-feature, Zero Rate Policy led most of the way and beat Razmataz by 43/4 lengths in the $75,000 Rumson Stakes.
Trained by Terri Pompay and ridden by Carlos Marquez Jr., the 3-year-old gelding covered the six furlongs over a fast track in 1:08 4-5 and returned $3.80, $2.60 and $2.20.
