Derby winner Animal Kingdom favorite for Belmont
June 8, 2011NEW YORK (AP) - Kentucky Derby favorite Animal Kingdom has been made the 2-1 favorite in a field of 12 for the Belmont Stakes.
Animal Kingdom will leave from the No. 9 post Saturday as he attempts to become the 12th 3-year-old to complete a Derby-Belmont sweep. The last Derby winner to take the Belmont was Thunder Gulch in 1995.
Preakness winner Shackleford is at 9-2, slightly higher than second choice Nehro, who is 4-1 on the morning line. Nehro finished second in the Derby and skipped the Preakness.
Also entered are Brilliant Speed, Isn't He Perfect, Master of Hounds, Monzon, Mucho Macho Man, Prime Cut, Ruler On Ice, Santiva and Stay Thirsty.
For the first time, the first seven finishers from the Derby will be running in the Belmont.
