Pour Moi wins thrilling English Derby by a head
June 4, 2011EPSOM, England (AP) - Pour Moi staged a thrilling rally to win the English Derby by a head over Treasure Beach on Saturday.
Carlton House, the 5-2 favorite owned by Queen Elizabeth II, finished a length back in third place.
The win in Britain's richest race was the first for a horse bred in France since 1976. A photo was needed to determine winner, but Pour Moi's 19-year-old jockey, Mickael Barzalona, was confident as he stood up in celebration as his horse crossed the finish line.
Pour Moi, trained by Andre Fabre, was the 4-1 second betting choice. He rallied from last to first over the final three furlongs of the 1 1/2-mile race to nip 25-1 shot Treasure Beach at the wire.
