Preakness winner Shackleford arrives at Belmont
May 30, 2011NEW YORK (AP) - Preakness winner Shackleford has arrived in New York less than two weeks before a possible start in the Belmont Stakes.
Shackleford's assistant trainer says the 3-year-old colt looks good after a van ride from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Plans call for the horse trained by Dale Romans to visit Belmont's main track Wednesday.
Romans said Monday a decision on whether Shackleford will run would come later this week. If he runs, it sets up a rubber match against Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom.
Shackleford was fourth in the Derby after leading in the stretch; Animal Kingdom was a close second in the Preakness.
A field of about 12 is expected for the 1 1/2-mile Belmont on June 11, the final leg of the Triple Crown.
