Ultra Blend wins Milady at Hollywood Park after DQ
May 21, 2011INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - Heavy favorite St Trinians was disqualified after crossing the wire first in the $150,000 Milady Handicap at Hollywood Park on Saturday, giving 5-year-old mare Ultra Blend her third straight victory and her first graded stakes title.
St Trinians and jockey Joe Talamo rallied from the back of the pack of seven fillies and mares as expected in the Grade 2 Milady, but the Hollywood Park stewards judged that she drifted in during the stretch run and demoted her to fourth place, leaving Ultra Blend and rider David Flores the winners.
It was the first disqualification in a graded stakes at Hollywood Park in nearly 10 years.
``She came over a little bit, but right when I felt her leaning in I grabbed her right away,'' Talamo said. ``I don't think she deserved to be disqualified. The outcome should have stayed the same. What can you do?''
Ultra Blend won by a length and paid $18, $7.60 and $4.60. American Story paid $6.80 and $4.40. She's Cheeky, the longest shot in the field by far, was third and paid $11.20 to show.
A California-bred mare trained by Art Sherman for owner Nels Erickson, Ultra Blend has won 10 times in 21 starts. She earned $90,000 for Saturday's victory, taking her career total to $625,646.
Earlier in the $100,000 Railbird Stakes, 3-year-old filly May Day Rose won easily for trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Joel Rosario, who earned his fourth victory of the day.
May Day Rose beat Big Tiz by 3 1/4 lengths for her second straight win and her fifth in nine starts and paid $7, $3.40 and $2.20. Big Tiz paid $4 and $2.40. The favorite, Pedaltothemedal, paid $2.10 to show.
