May 14, 2011INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - War Pilot defeated Vaundell by 11/2 lengths Friday night to win the $58,328 feature at Hollywood Park after a six-month layoff.
Ridden by Martin Pedroza, War Pilot ran six furlongs on the turf in 1:08.96 and paid $12.20, $3.80 and $3 in his first start since winning on the grass at Hollywood Park last November.
Vaundell returned $2.20 and $2.10, while Caught a Flyer was another 11/4 lengths back and paid $3.60 to show.
It was War Pilot's second win in five career starts, with earnings of $65,570.
Tyler Baze rode three winners on the card.
The track will honor his late cousin, Michael Baze, with a moment of silence between races on Saturday. The 24-year-old jockey, who was the leading rider at Hollywood Park in 2007, was found dead in his car at Churchill Downs earlier in the week.
Jockeys at Hollywood Park wore black arm bands Friday night in Baze's memory and will do so again Saturday.
