LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Trainer Kathy Ritvo almost didn't make it to the Kentucky Derby with Mucho Macho Man.

Ritvo spent eight years dealing with a degenerative heart disease before receiving a transplant in November 2008.

The procedure saved her life and gave her a new perspective. She says she no longer sweats the small stuff and instead tries to enjoy each day as it comes.

She'll try to become the first female trainer to win the Run for the Roses next Saturday with Mucho Macho Man, who won the Risen Star Stakes in February and finished third in the Louisiana Derby in March.

Ritvo says she understands why her story will command a lot of attention before the Derby. She's used the spotlight to become a spokeswoman for organ donation and is proud to show the scar from her transplant.
