Caixa Eletronica wins Belmont's Westchester Stakes
April 30, 2011NEW YORK (AP) - Caixa Eletronica, 10-1, pulled off a decisive three-length upset Saturday in the $98,000 Westchester Stakes at Belmont Park.
The 6-year-old is owned by Repole Stable and trained by Todd Pletcher, the team that will send out Uncle Mo and Stay Thirsty in the Kentucky Derby next Saturday. Cornelio Velasquez was aboard for his fourth win of the day. He lost a fifth victory when Frazzie was disqualified from first to third for stretch interference in the eighth race.
Caixa Eletronica sat third as Christmas for Liam, 9-5 on the board, set a blazing pace with Haynesfield, the 4-5 favorite, on his tail. Caixa Eletronica swept past the tiring leaders in the stretch for his 13th win in 41 starts, paying $22, $7 and $7.40.
The time was a quick 1:34.26 for the one mile.
Convocation, $4.30 and $5.20, rallied from last in the five-horse field to finish second. Schoolyard Dreams rallied to nip Haynesfield by a neck and paid $8.60 to show.
