Winter Memories wins Appalachian Stakes
April 21, 2011LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Winter Memories kicked off her 3-year-old season in style, overtaking Dos Lunas in the final yards to win the $100,000 Appalachian Stakes on Thursday at Keeneland.
Ridden by Jose Lezcano and trained by James Toner, Winter Memories bided her time before storming to the front in the stretch, beating Dos Lunas by a neck in the race for 3-year-old fillies.
Winter Memories paid $3.80, $3.20 and $2.40 while beating the field of 10 over the mile on turf, covering the distance in 1:37.27. The race was her first since finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Down last fall.
Dos Lunas held on for second and paid $21.40 and $8. Parting Words, with Julien Leparoux aboard, got up for third and paid $4.60.
