Lilacs and Lace pulls stunner in Ashland Stakes
April 9, 2011LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Lilacs and Lace pulled off a stunner in the $400,000 Ashland Stakes on Saturday, going wire-to-wire to punch her ticket to next month's Kentucky Oaks.
The 3-year-old filly went off as a 49-1 long shot in the field of nine but looked right at home on Keeneland's synthetic surface. Jockey Javier Castellano sent her to the front and she was never really threatened while beating Wyomia by a length.
Lilacs and Lace, trained by John Terranova and owned by James Covello, paid $99.40, $32.40 and $10 while covering the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.73.
Wyomia, ridden by Freddie Lenclud, paid $5.80 and $3.60 for second while favorite Kathmanblu got up for third and paid $3.
