Gilded Gem gives Baffert stakes win at Santa Anita
April 2, 2011ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Gilded Gem rallied from last to defeat stablemate Subsidized by 11/4 lengths to win Saturday's $100,000 Las Flores Stakes for fillies and mares at Santa Anita.
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert saddled both Gilded Gem and Subsidized, and his third entry, Mother Ruth, set the pace into the stretch before fading to fourth.
Ridden by Joel Rosario, Gilded Gem ran 61/2 furlongs in 1:15.22 and paid $7.20, $3.60 and $2.40. The 5-year-old mare was sired by Smarty Jones and is a half-sister to 2010 Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer.
Subsidized returned $5 and $3.20. Silver Swallow was another neck back in third and paid $3.
The first stakes victory for Gilded Gem was worth $60,000 and increased her career earnings to $223,800, with four wins in 10 starts.
