Zenyatta no longer pregnant with foal
March 29, 2011LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Horse of the Year Zenyatta is no longer in foal.
Zenyatta's racing manager Dottie Ingordo Shirreffs wrote on Zenyatta's Web site Tuesday that a recheck by officials at Lane's End, where she is stabled, revealed she had a miscarriage.
The 7-year-old mare was sent to Jonabell Farm to breed with Bernardini in February, and the pregnancy was confirmed on March 10.
Shirreffs wrote Zenyatta was ``terrific'' despite losing the foal.
Zenyatta was retired in November after a career in which she won 19 times in 20 starts. Her only defeat was to Blame in the Breeders' Cup Classic last fall at Churchill Downs.
Rachel Alexandra, who edged Zenyatta for Horse of the Year in 2009, remains pregnant after mating with two-time Horse of the Year Curlin in February.
