Worth Repeating wins Tokyo City Cup at Santa Anita
March 26, 2011ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Trainer Richard Mandella's Worth Repeating took an early lead Saturday and held off a come-from-behind charge from Honour the Deputy to win the $100,000 Tokyo City Cup on Saturday at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Martin Pedroza, Worth Repeating took the lead in the field of five older horses heading into the second turn, stretched the margin to two lengths by the top of the stretch and won by a half-length, covering 1 1/2 miles on dirt in 2:29.23.
Pedroza wasn't injured in a spill two races earlier.
``When I went down and didn't break a bone, I knew I was good to go,'' he said. ``In my country (Panama), they teach you not to be scared in the jockey school. If you fall, you just have to bounce back and forget about it.''
Worth Repeating, a 5-year-old son of Giant's Causeway, paid $18.20, $5.60 and $3.20. Honour the Deputy paid $3.80 and $2.60. Spurrier was third and paid $2.60 to show.
The favorite, Soul Candy, was briefly second at the top of the stretch but faded to fourth.
Patrick Valenzuela rode four winners on the card.
