Toby's Corner wins Whirlaway Stakes at Aqueduct
February 5, 2011NEW YORK (AP) - Toby's Corner has won the $98,000 Whirlaway Stakes on a muddy Aqueduct track, rallying from last and beating favorite J J's Lucky Train by two lengths.
This was Toby Corner's third straight win after finishing third in his debut. Toby's Corner, trained by H. Graham Motion, is the chestnut son of Bellamy Road, the 2005 Wood Memorial winner.
Toby's Corner had been on the rail for most of Saturday's race before angling outside on the final turn under jockey Eddie Castro. The winning time for the 1 1-16 miles was 1:45.66.
Toby's Corner paid $11.60, $4.70 and $3.20 in the race for 3-year-olds. J J's Lucky Train, the 8-5 favorite, returned $3.30 and $2.50. Preachintothedevil showed at $3.
