NJ to seek private operator for Monmouth Park
February 25, 2011TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - The state of New Jersey is moving ahead with a plan to seek a private operator for the Monmouth Park thoroughbred racetrack in Oceanport.
Gov. Chris Christie said Friday that the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority will issue a request for proposals for a private operator next week.
Officials hope to have a new entity in place by June 1 to oversee the track's traditional summer racing meet. Dates for that meet have not yet been determined.
The state recently worked out a deal to lease Meadowlands Racetrack to a standardbred owners and breeders group to operate harness racing there.
Christie also signed legislation Friday to expedite development of off-track wagering facilities in the state. A law permitting them was enacted 10 years ago, but only three are operating.
