Brethren cruises to win in Sam F. Davis Stakes
February 12, 2011OLDSMAR, Fla. (AP) - Brethren pulled away from a pair of long shots and won the $225,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in an early steppingstone to the Kentucky Derby.
Breaking from the outside No. 10 post Saturday, Brethren raced second under Ramon Dominguez until three furlongs from the wire before moving effortlessly to the lead.
Brethren is a half brother to last year's Derby winner Super Saver. The 3-year-old colt improved his record to 3-for-3. Like Super Saver, Brethren is trained by Todd Pletcher and owned by WinStar Farm.
The winning time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:45.07. Brethren, the favorite, returned $3.80 to win on a $2 bet. Long shots Too Experience finished second and Watch Me Go was third.
