Stakes-winning mare brings $1.4M at Keeneland sale
January 10, 2011LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A 5-year-old mare that has won stakes races in Europe and the U.S. brought $1.4 million Monday to top the first session of Keeneland's January Horses of All Ages Sale.
Teruya Yoshida's Shadai Farm purchased Ave, by European sire Danehill Dancer out of the In the Wings mare Anna Amalia. She was consigned by Three Chimneys Sales, as agent.
Dr. Yoshiro Nakaji, a veterinarian for Shadai Farm, said in a statement from Keeneland that Ave would be retired and sent to Japan to be bred.
Among Ave's wins are the Grade I Flower Bowl Invitational and the Group 3 Denny Cordell Lavarack & Lanwades Stud Fillies' Stakes.
Keeneland sold 187 horses Monday for $10,687,600, an average of $57,153. That's up from last year, when 178 horses were sold for $6,592,600, an average of $37,037.
The sale continues through Friday.
