6-year-old Cayambe rallies in Santa Anita feature
December 30, 2010ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Six-year-old gelding Cayambe rallied from last to beat Amazombie by a head and win Thursday's $68,000 allowance feature at Santa Anita.
Shortening to a sprint after four consecutive longer races and coming off a two-month layoff, Cayambe and Rafael Bejarano were sixth in the early going, moved up to third coming out of the turn and caught Amazombie in the final strides, covering 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:14.64.
It was the third win of the day for Bejarano.
Cayambe paid $18.20, $8.20 and $4. Amazombie returned $8.00 and $4.20. The favorite, Earnednevergiven, led early but faded to third and paid $2.80 to show.
It was the 10th win in 39 starts for Cayambe, who is trained by Victor Garcia for owner Lucky Charm Stable. Cayambe earned $40,800, taking his bankroll to $410,776.
